Reward Good Behavior

Parents instinctively understand it. Dog owners routinely practice the strategy. Our own human experience teaches us that an approach of reward and punishment will consistently produce desirable results. If you want to encourage good behavior, you must reward it.

John McCain has a history of opposing the conservative base. Too often, we could expect him to reach across the aisle rather than offer his hand to a conservative colleague. We have reacted by reserving enthusiastic support for his presidential bid. I have been very critical of John McCain in the past, and will continue to differ on many issues. In January I wrote a very critical article outlining my differences. Please read Know John McCain.

Much has changed since that article, including McCain’s turning to the base of his party for support. With the rising gasoline prices this summer, Senator McCain has changed his view on off shore drilling. He has promised that he will follow the will of the people on immigration issues, and he has moderated his position on other issues. In addition, there are many issues in which John McCain has always held consistently conservative views. He has always been strong pro-life, a supporter of the second amendment, and opposed to activist judges. An important consideration in these times is that McCain is one of the most qualified and informed leaders on national defense. There is a stark contrast with Senator Obama on all of these issues.

Because of the radical, socialist views that Obama would bring to the office, I decided long ago that I would vote for John McCain for President. However, I have been very reluctant to actively support him. I received a McCain bumper sticker from the Republican National Committee (RNC) several months ago, but it is still setting on my desk because I had yet to consider myself a ‘supporter’ of John McCain. That attitude has changed with his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The selection of Governor Palin was the turning point for me. I am encouraged and excited by the conservative record of Governor Sarah Palin, as well as the courage she has demonstrated in fighting corruption and waste from the entrenched power in both government and industry in her state. If she brings this same attitude and commitment to Washington, it could become infectious and really shake up politics as usual. What does this pick say about John McCain?

This pick demonstrates a realization by John McCain that the future of the Republican Party must include the conservative base, or the party must accept continued results like the 2006 congressional election. There was much speculation and encouragement from the mainstream media (MSM) and many RINO Republicans for John McCain to pick someone like Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge. They presented the argument that picking a liberal as his running mate would show courage and bipartisanship. John McCain rejected that argument. Reward good behavior.

It is now time to enthusiastically support the McCain / Palin ticket. I am going out now to put on my John McCain ’08 bumper sticker right next to Thompson ’08 (I still can’t remove that one). I am also ordering a new McCain / Palin sticker, and will begin actively supporting the Republican ticket.

  1. I feel the exact same way my FredHead friend. The simple fact that McCain picked a conservative as his running mate sealed the deal for me. I will definately support and vote McCain/Palin. I also love the fact that she is a woman, but if she was not a conservative woman I would not be as enthusiastic. I love the fact that McCain choosing a woman for VP has taken the wind out of NObama’s sails. He is no longer the only history maker in this election.

  2. Ha. I had a Ron Paul sticker on my bumper and, like yourself, plan to add (while still not taking off the former) a McCain/Palin sticker to it.

  3. Amen to you all. I too was a FredHead, and this (at least comes close) heals some of the disappointment over the fate of Fred. And your point to “reward good behavior” is a great one.

  4. Good for people to know.
